At UDD, we are making an impact with our clients to give them the best training to do just that, and to give parents peace of mind. Occupant fatalities in 2021 totaled 2,723, which was up 11.2% from 2,448 in 2020. Motor-vehicle crashes continue to be the number one cause of preventable death for U.S. teens.

Crashes involving young drivers (15 to 20 years old) impact people of all ages. In 2021, the number of people dying in crashes involving at least one young driver totaled 5,565, a 9.8% increase from the 2020 total of 5,069. This chart shows that young driver fatalities account for only 38% of the overall fatalities associated with young driver crashes. In 2021, there were 2,116 young driver fatalities, 1,065 fatalities among passengers of young drivers, 1,666 fatalities to occupants of all other vehicles, and 718 non-occupant fatalities.
